Fuji is a popular Nigerian musical genre. It arose from the improvisation Ajisari/were music tradition, which is a kind of Muslim music performed to wake believers before dawn during the Ramadan fasting season. Were music/Ajisari itself was made popular by the likes of Alhaji Dauda Epo-Akara, the deceased Ibadan-based “awurebe” founder and Ganiyu Kuti or Gani Irefin.

This drop features Fuji joints from the likes of Pasuma Wonder, Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, Midnight crew, Obesere, Ayuba, Barrister, Adeolofin, Mr Valentine, and a couple of Apala joints from Haruna Ishola . Out of desperation, i had to rip a few songs from video sources, so you’ll notice some of the longer tracks are split into multiple parts. Old fuji can be difficult to come by these days. Enjoy!

Sikiru Ayinde, better known by his fans as Barrister, is the leading Yoruba fuji singer. Fuji is a style from Yoruba-land, sometimes described as Juju music without guitars. Fuji (called after Mount Fuji in Japan) is in fact a quite complex style, drawing on Yoruba percussion roots, while adding a muslim vocal feel.
