Femi Kuti – Definitive Compilation [2007]
Thursday, March 19, 2009 16:33
It can’t be easy to follow in a famous father’s footsteps, especially when dad created an entire style of popular music. But Femi Kuti, the acknowledged king of Afrobeat, has made the best of the situation, taking over the charge from the legendary Fela Kuti and steering into new creative territory while still cranking out excellent examples of the original style.
The Definitive Collection is a compilation of Femi’s best work since he went solo in 1995. Powerful, classic-formula Afrobeat cuts reminiscent of golden era Fela compositions, like “Traitors of Africa” and “Wonder Wonder,” are joined by more contemporary takes on the style, such as “Do Your Best,” featuring hip-hop superstar Mos Def, and “Ala Jalkoum,” with Rachid Taha, the popular Algerian worldbeat artist.
