NOTES:
Had to interrupt my Manchester United vs. Spurs premier league match to preview this album. Pretty average album with some decent tracks in my opinion. P Square beats are beginning to sound familiar; one of the tracks on the album – “E No Easy” ft. J Martins, sounds very much like a recently released song from J Martins titled “Oyoyo”.

“Danger” is yet another example. See if you can guess what song from what hiphop artist this sounds like.

Nonetheless, the album contains a few party warmers. I’ve uploaded three sample joints off the album. If you like what you hear, buy the full album here or visit iTunes.

You r so biased against this group, I wonder what they might have done wrong.
Album sounds average? Songs are beginning to sound alike? are you describiing a typical naija artist or what? Pls just put out a song, and let the fans decide, you should play the messenger role that Dj’s are known for.

lol..that’s ridiculous. I don’t need to defend my support for the group. These are my views, and they are 100% objective.

  3. observer says:

    September 12th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

no they r not objective one bit! how dare you ask people to go out and search for hip hop songs their songs sound llike? i dont ever read you say that about other artist. when banky blantaanly covered rihanna’s umbrella, you never called him out on it. when certain artist on here sounded like Akon on his song, you praised him for being nigerian Akon. but wherre P-square is concerned you want to scrutinize everything track. any minimal similarity is blown out of proportion as a copycat. haters give them life. keep hating.

MM, I like ur response to Mr Chase’s comment. I guess what Mr C is trying to say is all the site that rate albums 2 stars & 3 stars are also “biased against” the artist(s) …right? People could be very funny.

Keep up the good work MM. U inspire me a lot!

i just replayed that eminem’s song and it doesnt sound nothing like this danger song. the only thing similar is the type of intrument used. different beat. you people are pushing it.

you must be the manager at my bank to know what my deposit slip looks like lol..but that besides the point. I’m a hater now because i give an objective opinion? lol..that does not sound like a bright inference. get this – I’m an independent voice, and i will keep my opinions as unbiased as possible. Matter of fact, it is for this one reason i will never be personal DJ for an artist. I do not work for any artists, neither do i get paid for promoting anybody’s work. I am not in the feel good business. Once again i do not need to defend my support for P Square, i’ll leave that to anyone that has attended my shows. The point is – no one gets a free pass because of what they did yesterday. I stand by my review of the last album – 7/10 at best , and the four tracks i uploaded happen to be the 4 best tracks on the album. I’ve been doing this music review shit for a long time, and i’m darn good at it. my opinion is what it is – my opinion, you don’t have to agree with it. And oh – regarding the public figure thing..i guess being a public figure means you gotta kiss ass.. well, you’re on the wrong blog my friend. we keep it 100 out here. My regards to p square lol..Thanks for visiting.

YO MM. YOUR REVIEW IS RIGHT ON POINT. ALOT OF THESE ANGRY BLOGGERS ARE STILL INFATUATED WITH P SQUARE’S PAST ALBUM “GAME OVER” (WHICH WAS VERY QUALITY). THE NEW SONGS LIKE “DANGER” AND “GIMME THAT” FOR THIS NEW ALBUM ARE AVERAGE AT BEST. BUT SINCE P SQUARE IS A HOUSEHOLD NAME, PPL ARE WILLING TO ALLOW THE SONGS TO GROW ON THEM. WOT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER IS THAT SONGS ARE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC TO REPRESENT AN ALBUM IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE TO MAKE THE PUBLIC WANT TO GO AND BUY THE PRODUCT. WHICH MEANS THESE TRACKS ARE USUALLY OF THE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM. WOT THE ANGRY BLOGGERS NEED TO ASK THEMSELVES IS: WOULD I SUPPORT THESE SONGS IF IT WERE AN UNKNOWN ARTIST? …THE ANSWER IS SADLY NO (IN FACT YOU WOULD ALL BE GIVING THE HARSHEST OF CRITICISM LOL). THEREFORE, I RESPECT AND APPLAUD MIGHTY MIKE FOR HAVING SUCH AN UNBIASED OPINION AND JUDGING THE GROUP ON THE QUALITY OF THEIR MOST RECENT WORK. NICE ONE MY GUY. ITS DJV AND IM OUT!

  15. DJ Dollie Popman says:

    September 14th, 2009 at 9:04 am

    Hey guys,
Point 1. DJs don’t just play songs, they play songs they like. They have to feel it to play it. Radio DJs make comments about songs they play, and even the ones they don’t play. The fans are not always objective by their very nature (Chase pls look up the meaning of the word fans).
P Square as a group has been excellent, and that’s the standard that they MUST be judged. Danger is good joint, but not outstanding. Not in the class of Game Over.
I’m not surprised about this outburst by Chase. P Square would do worse. They were reported to have complained and even abuse when they failed to win some awards last year.

  16. djmightymike says:

    September 14th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

I think DJMM is right. This album is weak and the beats sound the same.No disrespect but i expected something different from Psquare.
MM the download site for the sample tracks no dey work oh.Disappointed in them.

  18. Mr Chase says:

    September 15th, 2009 at 10:40 am

I hate to think that you guys would take my words out of content. I like DJ MM’s work, thats why i visit his blog. He’s like a lil bro, he goes out of line, you check him, but with love. Besides, Observer is right, DJMM never criticised Banky, Eldee and the rest of the artists that sampled songs, and not only did he criticise this group, he actually told fans to go do homework on the group, are you kidding me?

@DJ Dollie, I looked up the word “fans” and the dictionary wants you to be specific, do you mean ceiling fan or standing fan? Because I dont see the relevance to your defence for DJMM

  19. djmightymike says:

    September 15th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

common chase, let it go man lol..i’m not hating on P Square.. i even provided links to buy their records off iTunes.. ok granted eLDee, Banky, and Sauce kid all jacked Hiphop beats to make hit songs, those were all mixtape joints, and so they are free to sample all they want. seems like i hurt a lot of people’s feeling on this one lol..

DJMM. Have been visiting your blog for a while now and i have always considered your reviews on point. What earns you my respect the most is that even when you post a newbie’s music and you’re not entirely convinced of its appeal you always allow the fans decide for themselves. Why would you deliberately try to run down one of our greatest musical exports? You still have my respect as i realize that we form opinions about the people in our lives and where we are called upon to make judgment calls on these people, that opinion is bound to colour our judgment. It is why a doctor is not allowed to operate on a relative and a judge not allowed to sit on a case involving anyone he is even remotely connected to. I will not ask what your beef with P-Square is (if any) i personally consider them the prime example of succeeding without a shred of originality, but you must give it to them, they’ve got the formula for making music with mass appeal down pat. And this new album (copped it last night on the way home from work and right now you’d need a crowbar to pry it out of my car’s CD player) delivers brilliantly on that formula. Head-bopping beats, sing-along lyrics and the inevitable dazzling videos will combine to make this another smash hit album for the twins. And this is coming from a guy who predicted that Omawumi would be the real Idol on the day Jodie was evicted from Idols WA. I may not review music professionally but i do tend to call it right when i do. And i think this album will further entrench P-Square as an african music powerhouse. (That collabo with 2face is just SICK. 2baba’s vocals are simply incomparable. He always brings a certain something to a song, doesn’t he?) Anyways, keep up the good work.

  22. My name's Joe Ruano. All u haters of DJ MM's review of P Sqr's album, stop hatin. I hate hype. DJ MM told us exactly what d album is, no hard feelings or disrespect on his part. Talkin about Banky & d rest, P Sqr & Banky r not of d same level so ex says:

  23. DJ Dollie Popman says:

    September 16th, 2009 at 7:49 am

@ Chase, pls come off this. Fans is the word you used. I can’t figure how you would relate a household appliance to a review of an average album! Well I suspected you may not have known that fan is short for fanatic but It’s incredible you don’t also know its plural form. I’m not defending MM. I’m just stating the fact. That a DJ decides to play some songs (out of thousands in his library) is a self evident fact that he/she has already express his opinion. A DJ doesn’t wait for a fan or audience member to tell him which joint is hot or not! Rather it’s the other way round!
I even suspect this ‘observer’ is one of P2 siblings. He’s too emotional and full of venom.

@sendswift, Thank you your comment, and even more props for copping the cd. guys, i want you all to know, i am not condemning the album. I maintain a good relationship with the Okoye boys like i do with every other artist (big or small, rich or broke), and i will be the first to tell you P Square have contributed a great deal to Nigerian music. You can be rest assured there is no favoritism going on here. I guess i had too much fun with the last album and expected a little more from the boys. who knows how far this album will go? perhaps i will revisit this post a year later and try to figure out how i managed to get this one wrong. Only time will tell.

J Martins produced most of PSquares last album so similarity is inevitable. Fourtunately they are far stronger at delivery than he is. It happens with loads of producers turned performers. Neptunes, Swizbeats… to a lesser degree
Babyface & Timbaland(successful i agree), Having said that I think PSquares strength is in distilling what “everyman” wants to sing about in 12 tracks on each album.

The level of connection/interaction with subject matter they get from the generality of listners is that xtra factor no one ever bothers to factor.

hw sentimental n personal can nigerians get. is amazing what passes for music in nigeria. I guess is about time we begin to look at the positive side of criticism other than witch-hunting as people think. dj, i share ur opinion. no dispute about their good voice but creativity and originality also counts. is about time someone let them know. i guess is the only way to help bring out the best in them. regards. to the angry bloggers – everyone is entitle to his or her opinion. say it the way you see and i say it the way i see it. no offence

wow! first time i real MM’s review of the album, i had to go back and lissen to tha album again… i thot i didnt like the album b4 but i tell u what, i have bought 6copies now… FYI, album sold a million copies in 8days…. i guess thats by every means an average album, in MM’s rating….
what is original these days, JayZ takes someone’s song and does empire state of mind (mind u its not called remix) and those who dont know music will think it is an original thing and go on applauding the hova… but most of the songs from yankee that we rock to are remakes of oldies, yet thats cool… our bois do what they can to giv u good music without forgetting the africans in us and we comot ak47 to harrass them… na wa o… Taken, album’s not as great as GameOver.. Admitted, gameover set ppl’s expectations too hig, but u will be sick to tell me there are 10 singers in naija ryt now who can come up with an album as qualitative as DANGER… am not saying naija hasnt got talent am sayin ryt now, vew ppl can measure up2 danger’s quality… maybe we need to pause for a min and think about that… them bois don did good for themselves and they country, go do urs…

Look, people…even P-Square(Peter and Paul) will tell you that they sampled parts of Eminem’s “Without Me” on Danger – NOT “guess who’s bac” – FoluShaw.
But back to the point, they’re great musicians and although its not their best yet, this album isn’t average to me – I partied pretty hard to the songs off this cd when I went to Liberia this christmas season…keep it up P-Square, your west African brothers love your shit. Sampling is not a crime, claiming that its your beat is the crime. So, while I wouldn’t want to claim a sampled beat is mine, I have no problem bumping a good song on a sampled beat.
As for sounding similar, let one person here tell me they can’t spot a Timbaland beat from a mile away.
Don’t criticize without giving props where they’re due and stop being blindly loyal and accept the fact that they sampled…more than once.

    Peace,
    The ACE
