Singer-songwriter LOLA was born in Minnesota, to Nigerian parents. She
grew up on the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and
moved to the US to study Journalism and Political Science at the
University of Minnesota. After graduation, she enrolled in law school
at Cornell University, but dropped out during her first semester. She
moved to Washington, DC, and then to Los Angeles, where she worked at
E! Entertainment. Around this time, she started doing open mics and
performing at coffee shops, and went on to tour the US, Canada and
Japan as a backup singer for afro-jazz band, Toby Foyeh & Orchestra
Africa. In her spare time, she taught Yoruba language at UCLA. In
2008, she moved back to Nigeria to work as a journalist, and to pursue
a music career.

She likes to try her hands at playing the guitar; acknowledges Abba,
Elton John, Billy Joel, Onyeka Onwenu, Majek Fashek, Tina Turner,
Seal, Lauryn Hill and Heather Headley as her greatest musical
influences; and looks forward to performing – with Akon – in a filled
Abuja National Stadium.

Move (Like This), her newly-released debut single, is a soulful
response to the frustrations of returning home, to what she describes
as “a hostile environment – no light, no water, frustrated people.”
Drawing on English and her native Yoruba, in Move (Like This) LOLA
finds reasons to stay unfazed, even as her beloved country threatens
to fall apart.
