Mr. Obama’s win was announced in Times Square, New York City.

Local residents celebrated as they learned of Senator Barack Obama’s apparent victory in western Japan.

Students held placards at the Menteng One primary school in Jakarta, which Mr. Obama attended for two years in the late 1960s. His memoirs recalled his time here as the “bounty of a young man’s life.”

Supporters cheered and cried as CNN announced Mr. Obama as the projected winner at a rally in Grant Park in Chicago.
